{jcomments on}He crouched hidden behind the tree…..his breathing was steady, his mind focused, he watched the open field with eagle like intensity, the wall to his right protecting him from random fire, the grass and leaves around his feet merged with his camouflaged suit, making him all but invisible to those he hunted…… those who hunted him.
The Sniper rifle sat snuggly in his shoulder, the barrel lowered casually to the dry dirt that kept blowing in his face causing him to squint. Leaves flickered before him, racing across his field of vision, but he paid them no heed……movement, from behind the burnout lorry at the far end of the field, he saw a black mark appear above the rear bumper……it hadn’t been there a second ago, slowly bringing the rifle to bear, he clicked his neck to loosen the tight muscles, placing his cheek against the hard wooden butt he closed his right eye and aimed through the sight. He moved the cross hairs slowly along the side of the lorry until he came to the spot he had seen the dark shape…………….there, the top of a black balaclava flashed briefly above the vehicles twisted bonnet.
Taking a deep breath, he lined up the two connecting black lines of his sights where the balaclava had appear moments before, he held his breath, every muscle tensed to prevent any unrequired motion…….it appeared again, his finger tighten on the trigger, slowly squeezing, his heart beat echoed in his ears, the only sound he heard….thump …thump …..thump a hairs breath from contact his finger froze on the trigger, the balaclava was moving towards the front of the vehicle, if it kept moving he would have a clearer shot….he waited what seemed like minutes as his target edged closer and closer to the front of the lorry…..then a wet nose appear by the shattered headlights, quickly followed by to two floppy ears, …..he relaxed as the black Labrador walked into the open, its tail happily wagging, he smiled to himself, feeling the tension drain away as he started to lower the barrel…..to later he saw glint of light off of glass from under the lorry, his heart seemed to stop. He saw the muzzle discharge, but never heard the bang, he was thrown back to lay prone, the moisture starved dirt absorbing his life blood, his rifle lying uselessly across his knees, his body twitched twice before finally releasing his final breath
